Grade is a term used to describe the quality of the hide being used for a specific product. For example: hides that have scars and holes are considered low grades, while hides with a cleaner surface are considered high grade. Leather descriptions commonly misguide consumers by using a generic term like "genuine leather", which could describe a product made with Full-Grain Leather but can also be used to describe Bonded Leather (both defined below).
Leather can be very thick, depending on the animals’ age, its size and species. Leather thickness can vary greatly within a species, with some having thicker skins than others, and even on one individual animal, some body parts have thicker skin compared to other body parts. Leather has to be thinned for the end product to feel uniform; this thinning process is called Splitting. Depending on the application of the leather, different thicknesses are utilized. Thickness is measured in weight, and can range from one to even twelve ounces, with twelve being the thickest. As a reference, I usually use 4-5oz leather for my bags.
You need to get familiar with the different grades of leather, how they differ from each other and how they are advertised to the public. With all the options currently available, it’s easy to realize just how confusing and misguiding these labels can be. The information below doesn’t contain ALL the different types of leathers, but it’s a great start and will detail the different quality grades you should know before giving your money away.
FULL-GRAIN LEATHER
Starting at the very top, we find Full-Grain Leather, which is the whole skin from surface to end, it’s thick and very durable; it’s also usually the most expensive type of leather. Full-Grain Leather includes the entire thickness of the skin and refers to the lack of bonding agents and fillers throughout the finishing process, and hasn’t been sanded or ‘buffed’ (process that removes marks and imperfections). While buffing the leather to make it smooth and more uniform is visually appealing to some (and very convenient when it comes to mass-production), keeping the original grain allows for added strength and durability in the leather.
The highest quality furniture, luggage and footwear often use Full-Grain Leather, which typically develops a beautiful patina over time.
TOP-GRAIN LEATHER
Next in line we find Top-Grain Leather, it’s made when you take Full-Grain Leather and split it, to create a top grain and a split grain. Top-Grain leather is full grain that has been shaved down, it has had the split layer, containing all the natural imperfections, stripped away, thinning the leather and usually making it easier to work with. This is the most common type of leather used in high-end products and is what you’ll likely find at a luxury handbag store when shopping.
Top-Grain Leather has had its surface sanded and a finish applied, giving it a very smooth feel. Although the process takes away the natural imperfections and overall breathability of the leather, it also creates a seal that prevent stains that would otherwise get absorbed by Full-Grain Leather.
NUBUCK
Nubuck is commonly confused with its cousin, Suede, but they are very different. Suede is the underside of Split Leather, while Nubuck is a finishing, or process, by which the leather is treated. Nubuck is Full-Grain Leather that is sanded with something rough, creating a ‘furry’ surface. You can tell the difference between Nubuck and Suede by looking for the skin texture of the animal. Nubuck will still clearly show the Grain lines from the skin while Suede will have a more uniform finish.
SUEDE
Remember how Full-Grain Leather is split to create Top-Grain Leather? The leftover pieces are called Split-Grain Leather. If you use the bottom piece, you get "Split Suede", if you use the Top-Grain Leather upside down (to reveal the remaining flesh under the skin), then you get what is known as true Suede.
Suede tends to have a very short nap, giving the leather its signature velvety feel while maintaining the thickness thus reducing the chance for the material to warp or stretch over time.
Suede has the signature napped surface from the underside of the skin, this is what gives the material its signature textured feel. Due to the fact that cow leather usually has a rougher feel, lamb, goat, calf, and even deer hides are commonly used instead.
Suede is thinner and porous, making it easy to stain and overstretch; when buying a Suede product make sure you also invest in a good leather sealer that will make the material water-resistant and will protect your purchase in the long run.
CORRECTED-GRAIN or “GENUINE LEATHER”
A lot of the leather on the market these days is Corrected-Grain Leather or Genuine-Leather, this is leather that was stripped off its natural grain (either by sanding or buffing) and has had an artificial grain applied to the surface that is then sealed off and altered to match the bonding agents, finally it’s embossed with various grain characteristics to hide natural flaws. In other words, manufacturers take Split-Leather and create a fake surface for it. "Patent Leather" contains PVC that is used to create the shiny, reflective, smooth and colorful leather so very common in women's products.
The leather-like pattern was likely impressed into the surface with a heavy machine and then sprayed with leather stain or dye to give the fake grain a more natural appearance. If you are looking for a high-quality leather product, AVOID this at all costs. This type of leather, and the way it’s presented to the public, is what made me finally sit down and write this post.
BONDED LEATHER
The ultimate disgrace in ‘leather’ products (I’m not even sure why they call it ‘leather’ at this point) is Bonded Leather. This is made up of, get ready, leftover scrap pieces of leather that are shredded to a pulp. These shreds are then bonded together using polyurethane or latex on top of a fiber sheet, in other words it is made up of (typically) less than 20% actual leather and this leather is only present on the back. Think of chipboard wood: it is scrap wood soaked in resin, compressed together, and veneered with fake wood grain.
Unfortunately, Bonded Leather is commonly sold as “Genuine Leather”, and there’s no way of telling how much actual leather it contains vs the chemicals, I can guarantee no manufacturer is going to be honest on this ratio. Belts are a big item that is commonly advertised as “100% Leather”, there’s currently no regulation forbidding retailers to advertise bonded leather as such, and these products usually contain between 30%-50% plastic; this is an issue, especially with leather bags, because vinyl can be made to look, feel and even smell like ‘real’ leather, but it ages very differently and tends to fall apart.
If you are in the market for a good leather product, beware of sales people recommending bonded leather as opposed to Full-Grain Leather, stating it’s ‘almost like the real thing’. ITS NOT. At half the price, you are truly getting what you paid for, you’ll be lucky if the item lasts longer than 6, the crap will be peeling off and you’ll quickly realize this bonded ‘leather’ was nothing less than a scam.]]>Ways to measure your wri...

Ways to measure your wrist:
Leather. The leather used to create the Bryer Collection is sourced directly from Horween Leather, the oldest tannery in the United States. Still operating in its native Chicago, they continue to be family owned after five generations. The reason I fell in love with them is the way Horween cultivated its experience to offer dynamic lines of leathers. Like Bryer, all Horween leathers are still made by hand, the same way they were done generations ago. This traditionalism, attention to detail and deep colors and textures are what keep me coming back! I could keep writing about them for the rest of this entry, but if you are really interested, read all about Horween here to find out why they are truly one of a kind when it comes to consistency, quality, and longevity of the material.
Thread. When crafting Bryer products, it is imperative to use the highest quality thread, after many trials and errors, bags coming undone and seams coming un-sewn, I am convinced the thread I use is really the best available. My thread ensures that the stitching in the bags will last and not fray or become fuzzy, and weak with extended use and time. Additionally, every single thread strand used in my products is waxed by hand, I find this makes the thread stronger, and gives an overall cleaner appearance.
Hardware. Same as with my thread, I am convinced that the hardware I use comes from the highest quality sources, with all the pieces being of strong materials and created with durability in mind. None of that cheap hardware that will break if you pull on a shoulder strap a bit too hard. The D-Rings used across the Bryer product line come from a factory that has been doing this for decades and has truly perfected the art. Our zippers are strong and durable, sourced from Riri or YKK and I pride myself in saying I would never use a plastic zipper that couldn’t withstand the test of time.
Lined Products. All Bryer Leather products are lined using high quality fabrics, this extra step may take a long time as opposed to creating a bag that has no liner, but the increase in quality is exponential and the beautiful design make lining each piece worth my time. A great liner gives the bag character, and creates a personalized look and feel that most of my competitor’s can’t offer. Additionally, it increases the durability of the piece as a whole because it helps the structure of the leather by providing reinforcement and avoiding overstretching.
Made to Order. The idea of Bryer Leather ignited when I realized the market didn’t have an option for me when I was looking for a custom bag. I decided to try to make my own, it took me about a month, (endless frustrations and a lot of failed attempts) but when I was finished: I was hooked. Slowly and very organically, this has turned into a bit more than a hobby. All Bryer bags are made to order, one at a time and by hand, everything from the leather color, to the thread color is your own choice, who else does that?

Manufacturers don't usually have the costs associated with a brick and mortar store, they have no overhead for their storefront, and don't have to worry about really high rents in nice and up-and-coming neighborhoods. Manufacturers also don't have sales people, they usually don't have a marketing department focused on PR and customer leads, at Bryer, my main focus is on the Product, I strive to create an amazing design, that will delight even those that are usually hard to please while maintaining the highest standard in quality materials and craftsmanship. I don't worry about mannequins, about our sales people getting commissions, or about whether we can still afford to keep the store open at the mall.
Although some of the biggest e-retailers can be pretty reliable, you might run into an issue with warranties. The fine line in any warranty could shorten the time frame the warranty will remain valid. When shopping directly from Bryer, we keep a record of the purchase in our database. You know for certain the item will be covered. Still, if your purchase comes from a reseller and not directly from us, make sure the seller has a solid reputation.
When working directly with my team and me on your order, you get the knowledge that accumulates with years of experience in everything from design to utility. You can rest assure that we have a local help desk; we will never use an outsourced hotline to mitigate our issues between you and the team.
When we create a product, we price it so that it makes business sense for us to make it in the first place, (we are a business after all). To calculate the price, we take the total cost of the materials; add the time it takes to make the piece and come up with what we believe is representative of what the piece is worth. This translates into the complete elimination of mark-ups that usually are accounted for in store bought items. When you buy directly from us, we don't split the profit with anyone else, thus making the product as cost effective as possible.
The benefits of buying direct have been around forever, and everyone knows it’s the best way to go when available, so why don't we do it all the time? It’s because manufacturers RARELY make themselves available to the general public. It’s the same reason Tesla is such an innovator in its field, they want to give consumers the CHOICE of buying directly from the source. We make that possible and available through our site! You don't need a seller's permit, or a Tax ID to purchase anything from us, all you need is a computer and a valid credit card!
Ditch the middle men, and make sure you go straight to the source! It’s the best way to get high quality goods at the fairest prices.

We were taught from an early age that our wallets (as men) go in our back pockets, and although this isn't a bad thing in and of itself, it gets really bad when the wallet we speak of looks like tame version of George Costanza’s wallet. We were taught from an early age that our wallets (as men) go in our back pockets, and although this isn't a bad thing in and of itself, it gets really bad when the wallet we speak of looks like tame version of George Costanza’s wallet. The big problem: a wallet in your back pocket can hurt your posture and cause back, neck and shoulder pain.
I am referring to sitting on your wallet for prolonged periods of time. Asymmetrical posture causes muscles to compensate over long periods and can cause pain as a result of tension in the low back and hips. Think of it as having a tent canopy with collapsible legs set up, but lowering the legs on one side by two inches and leaving them fully extended on the other side. This produces stresses on the joints at the top, albeit subtle ones. In the body, the “hardware” connecting these symmetrical structures are all living and adaptive, so they change tensions over time. This leads to long-term consequences and faster wear and uneven tensions (and, as such, pain, since the body can feel) for the structure as a whole. These are all understood concepts in physiology and in musculoskeletal pathophysiology, and are anything but radical claims. They are directly drawn from simple physics and physiology, and are explained by and treated by orthopedists, physical therapists and other health practitioners alike.
It is important now more than ever that you take care of yourself and your body, don’t let an overstuff wallet be your cause of pain. Our three wallets are specifically designed to be ergonomically sound, they are slim by design, and our Minimalist is so slim, it fits in your front pocket!

QUALITY MATERIALS, HANDMADE DETAILS & CUSTOMIZATION MATTER
Bryer Leather started with a desire on my part to want great things, and with this, my goal has always been to offer the best available products. The concept of making a product by hand, with the expertise that I have been able to gather throughout a lifetime, is something people just don’t do anymore.
The true artisan is he who lives and breathes the products he is doing, one of my goals is to one day be that artisan: that is why I brought Bryer Leather to life.
I came into this business because I wanted my customers to be able to own something that they too, could value and pass on to future generations. Something that will only get better with age, and that will look and feel better 20 years from now, than the way it looked the day I delicately cut out the individual pieces of leather and slowly put it together.
When you purchase something made by hand, the care and attention to detail is what you get: the sensibility of finding everything was thought out and even the smallest details have their reason for being.
The luxury, feel and uniqueness of something well-made is unequivocal; it is the reason why our parents’ and grandparents’ stuff still exists, the reason why we can still cherish that old suitcase, or that great pair of glasses. Some of these articles bring a certain nostalgic feel when you come in contact with them.
Why is it then, we continue to push to excessive consumerism? We are geared to over-consume everything, and discard it as soon as it shows signs of age. We do it everywhere: with buildings, cars and particularly with the items in our closet.
This is not a lament – or not merely a lament – for bygone times. It’s become a social, cultural and economic issue as well. We have become the most wasteful people since the beginning of time.
The reason I started this business was not only because I was born to create beautiful and high quality products, but because I want to reshape our mentality: buy one great bag, and you won’t have to buy another. Ever. This reduces waste, it reduces unnecessary consumption and in turn it reduces the products that are constantly being mass-produced in great quantities, but with the poorest quality available for the sake of a cheap sale.
Bryer Leather wants to stress that it’s not about quantity anymore, it’s not about how much of something you can own, it’s about the quality of what you are holding in your hand, and the fact that you know exactly where it came from, how it was made, and that it was made for you... Made especially for you. It even has your initials!

At Bryer Leather, I believe in the concept of buying something once. It is my goal that your product lasts a lifetime. I prefer to work with leathers that develop a rich patina over time. The regular wear and tear makes your item look better, and lets them show your story.
The tips below will help you maintain your leather looking its best.
Tip #1 – What if the leather gets wet?
If your item ever gets wet: Dry it slowly. Speed drying leather changes its chemical structure, and you end up with stiff crinkle cut chaos. Aim for room temperature drying with gentle air rather than direct heat time (as with a hair-dryer). Shape the item back to its original shape, as leather will remember the shape it was when wet.
Tip #2 – What if the leather gets too hot?
If leather gets too dry: Rub something moist into it. Pick a light leather dressing or cream that is made from reasonably natural ingredients and doesn't have coloring in it. I personally recommend Leather Honey, although each country has very different products, and you are free to do your research and find the best product to fit your style (some will make the leather darker, while others will make it glossy if it contains a sealant and a conditioner).
Tip #3 – What if the leather gets dirty?
If leather gets dirty: Just use a damp cloth and rub the area until it’s cleaner, try not to get it wet. For really dirty leather, I use Leather Soap and a damp cloth and rub the entire item in a circular motion.
The moisturizing cream works to nourish the leather, ensuring the material maintains its flexibility and does not dry out with age. It permeates the leather while still allowing it to breathe. Serves as an excellent preventive measure against potential cracking and wear.
Tip #4 – How do I prevent leather from overstretching?
Leather stretches out, but not back: If you start to overfill a wallet, it will never really return to its former taut self. If you stretch a leather bag when wet or very humid, it will move even faster. Just learn to carry the right amount, and this issue takes care of itself.
Tip #5 – How do I safely store leather items?
Don't wrap it in plastic, as your leather needs to breathe. The goal is to prevent any mildew so keep some ventilation going. A burlap bag or a cotton cloth bag sealed to prevent dust is ideal.

Chicago's centric location made it the country's main railroad hub for years during the late 1800's and the early 1900's, and huge amounts of freight moved along the veins of the American Railroad System, all of them stopping (or at least passing) through the city. Tanneries, Shoe Polish Makers and Brush Makers were very popular during this time, and most of them resided in Chicago (wanting to be close to the raw materials they used - most of them remnants and byproducts of the food industry). In a city that once had over 40 tanneries, only one remains today.
Originally founded by Isadore Horween, a Ukrainian who immigrated into Chicago in 1893 and worked in a Chicagoan tannery for 12 years, later deciding that he could make better leather and started the Horween Leather Company. Since its early beginnings, the headquarters have moved only once, and now they are managed by Nick Horween, a fifth generation family employee. Check out the video below for a quick glimpse into this amazing factory:
Over its long history, Horween Leather Company has become a household name, and their leather is a worldwide staple. Their goal continues to mirror its Founders' vision, and they strive daily to create the best leather in the world. They accomplish this by using methods that don't cut corners, and creating components chosen strictly for their quality. They cultivate their experience to offer a wide variety of leathers, inclusive of Chromexcel and Football leathers, all inclusive of traditional old world tannages and techniques, while efficiently incorporating carefully selected updates. Their leather is still made today, by hand, just like it was in the early 1900's.
My favorite part: they continue to offer an unparalled blend of quality, consistency, timeliness and innovation that is unmatched in the industry.
